Capitalizing on Cow Power
MaternalPlus highlights herds focused on females, gathers important data.

When it comes to data collection, interpretation and decision-making tools, cattlemen using Angus genetics are in capable hands. The data available to Angus producers is made possible thanks to progressive cattlemen who see the value in reporting numbers for different traits within their own herds.
Cattlemen utilizing Angus genetics have access to selection tools built on an expansive database answering questions related to calving ease, fertility, feedlot performance, cow longevity and much more. The MaternalPlus® program makes finding cattlemen focused on producing profitable and productive females a bit easier.
Earning the right to display the MaternalPlus Herd logo takes commitment to reporting more details about their herd. Members must participate in Inventory Reporting, the Association’s whole-herd reporting program through Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR®), for a year. Upon reenrollment producers are eligible to earn the MaternalPlus distinction. In addition to submitting a production record on every female, MaternalPlus herds are required to submit heifer breeding data, as well as weaning weights or calf disposal codes for each animal.
Annual production records for active females ask for information on their production in a particular year (calf record, reason code for no calf or a disposal code if a female left the herd). If breeders wish to earn the MaternalPlus distinction, they also need to submit heifer breeding records and weaning data for their calf crop annually. After all, analyzing activity throughout a female’s lifetime is essential to characterizing maternal fertility and productivity.

Data submitted contribute to the development of genetic selection tools for maternal traits — such as heifer pregnancy and functional longevity — and can be used at the individual-herd level to help make management and selection decisions.
The MaternalPlus Herd logo shows an operation is dedicated to complete data reporting, which provides their customers with information to make effective selection decisions. Other program benefits include increased accuracy of the heifer pregnancy (HP) expected progeny difference (EPD), as well as calving ease direct, birth weight and weaning weight EPDs on unregistered calves under 12 months of age.
