The Mayes family of ZWT Ranch firmly believes in the strength of their motto, “stacked maternal power.” Within their herd, that looks like generations of a power animal with a feminine front end, hoof quality and udder quality.
“We try to key on cows that have a good production record with good weaning ratios and yearling ratios,” says Wil Mayes. “All those factors go into selecting a good cow. We try to place as many cows like that in a pedigree to create a product that we deem profitable.”
Cows that are long-lasting have a place at ZWT.

“Some of our best cows that we have on the ranch now are 8, 9 and 10, and we’ve just finally gotten a nice proven production record underneath of them to start implementing them back into our embryo program,” Wil says. “Our philosophy is focusing on production and longevity and then just stacking proven cows that are problem-free to create a consistent product.”
Tony and Mary Mayes and Wil and Elizabeth Mayes are involved in all facets of beef cattle production — from the seedstock herd to a commercial cow-calf operation, backgrounding and the feedlot.
“Our goal is to create value for our commercial cattlemen by helping them produce more pounds for pay weight and make cows that have the longevity to maximize their profitability,” Wil says.
Some of the cow families ZWT has built its program on include Donna, Elba, Blackcap May, and Rose. Many of their offspring can be found in ZWT’s fall production sale Nov. 13 at the ranch in Crossville, Tenn.
