Inspired by a legacy of practical, market-changing cattle producers, Elizabeth and Dustin Perkins believe matings made with high-dollar bulls are only as good as the foundation set by the cows. Perkins Angus Ranch, Lorraine, Kan., focuses on females with longevity and structure that have live calves year after year.

Elizabeth’s father, Richard Janssen of Green Garden Angus, played a role in getting the Certified Angus Beef (CAB) program off the ground. He was on the Association Board of Directors during the vote to approve CAB and was friends with its founder, Mick Colvin. Elizabeth learned early that genetics can create better carcass quality without having to increase feed costs.

In producing their cattle, they keep CAB® specifications in mind — specifically the 16-inch ribeye limitation. Elizabeth says they spend time with their customers to help them reach their goals. While she originally wanted to be a geneticist, she enjoys working with cattle too much, so she uses that passion to help her customers.

They believe in truly moderate-sized females that don’t need a lot of extra feeding.

“We weigh our cows every year at weaning so we know we have an average weight of 1,250 pounds,” says Elizabeth.

They also concentrate on creating feed-efficient cattle, having used GrowSafe feed-efficiency testing and having participated in feed-efficiency research studies with Oklahoma State and Kansas State universities.

Perkins Angus Ranch hosts a spring bull sale — April 7, 2025 — and a fall female sale with Green Garden Angus. They recently opened a storefront in Lyons, Kan., to sell their freezer beef.
