Oak Hollow Angus
Kenneth Lowe & Joe Lowe
March 10, 2025
Functional, high-quality cattle for the lowest cost of production — it’s not an oxymoron at Oak Hollow Angus. It’s the result of nearly 50 years of careful study and selection for fertility, calving ease, milk, structural soundness, growth and carcass quality.
The cow herd consistently has a 97%+ conception rate in a 60-day breeding season in a commercial environment. Kenneth and Joe Lowe, the seventh and eighth generations in the cattle industry at Smiths Grove, Ky., have relied heavily on performance testing on fescue.
“We select for what is profitable in commercial beef production — bull durability and the cow’s ability to have a live calf, calve on a 365-day interval, raise a calf the market wants to buy, and have the fertility, udder structure and feet that allow them to do it every 365 days for 12-15 years,” Joe says.

They enroll in the MaternalPlus® program and submit “every piece of cow herd data [the American Angus Association] has a form to submit,” says Joe. “We were part of the research population for hair shed, udder score and foot score EPDs.”
They have breed leaders for the Angus maternal weaned calf value index ($M) as herd sires on the farm, at a major bull stud and available in each of their bull sales. They are proud of having the top-ranked $M bull in both the main sire summary and the supplemental sire summary as walking herd sires in their operation.
They host a spring bull sale on the last Monday of March and a fall bull sale the last Monday in October.
