Mogck & Sons
Charles & LeAndra Mogck, Chase Mogck, Ty Mogck; Logan & Christie Winkler
March 9, 2025
For the past 40 years, registered Angus have found their home in the Olivet, S.D., pastures of Mogck & Sons. Charles and LeAndra; their sons, Chase and Ty; their daughter, Christie Winkler, and her husband, Logan, raise Angus cattle with the intent of blending maternal and carcass.
They’ve experimented with other breeds in the past, but ultimately, Angus is the best fit.
“Angus was the breed that wasn’t just maternal, but did everything else,” says Charles. “Our udder quality is excellent, our feet and legs, our structure, too; and now we’re focusing on using bulls with marbling that have phenotype and have muscle. We’re breeding maternal cattle that we can prove are maternal, we’re putting carcass marbling in, and we’re constantly trying to increase red meat yield.”

Alongside reasonable birth weights and strong growth, robust calves at weaning that fit the diverse genetic needs of the area are a priority. Varying feed bases, from cropland to plains, means the Mogcks don’t want to be boxed into any one type of cattle. Instead, they strive to have growth, carcass and maternal.
One cow family or one sire family also doesn’t suit Mogck & Sons.
“Things change so fast that we don’t want to get caught up in one fad at the time, and we believe by being diverse in our cow herd that we can probably move faster,” Charles says. “When things change, because we have different bloodlines, we can make changes for customers faster than if we were focused on one sire group or one cow family.”
