Hilltop Angus Ranch is home to resilient females, a stellar herd bull and an often blizzard-prone winter.

The traits of $M represent their herd well, says Cory Poser, the fourth generation at the Denton, Mont., ranch he operates with his wife, Tammy, and parents, Gary and Carmen.

With sound feet, good udders and moderate longevity, Montana’s rough country doesn’t pose a big threat to their females. If affected, the Posers keep a close eye on cows that don’t fit their program and maintain quality in the herd.

“If they can make it here, they can make it about anywhere, to be honest,” Poser says.

When $M first was introduced as an Angus dollar value index, Hilltop Angus’ herd was already strong in its component traits. Since then, they have improved it with intention and a marketing goal.

“That’s an easy sell for us because we can explain to people, especially in this area, that’s something they want, and they look forward to,” Poser says.

Poser’s herd bull, Hoffman Bar None, a son of Deer Valley Growth Fund, further fortifies traits they value. Bar None has produced high-quality bulls and even better females.

“They number up really good, but they’re still moderate, a lot of muscle, a lot of easy fleshing,” Poser says, noting he was drawn to the bull because of his dam, HA Rito Lady 3839. Semen is available through Genex Cooperative, and more information can be found at HilltopAngus.com. His first calf crop will be available at Hilltop Angus’ Spring Sale April 8.
