We are in the midst of the back-to-school buzz. Stores are stocked with classroom supplies, and teachers are sharing their wish lists. Growing up near a college town and residing in one now, this time of year always brings activity and excitement as students begin to arrive.

My own little pre-schooler is giving me a glimpse into school years ahead. I hope her excitement about learning something new will never fade.

However, we know important knowledge is gained outside the classroom, too. Raised by a graduate of the school of hard knocks, I’m keenly aware of the value of lessons learned from farm life and hard work.

“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character — that is the goal of true education.”  — Martin Luther King Jr.

The American Angus Association and National Junior Angus Association’s support of growing the next generation is the envy of the industry and reflective of the Angus breeders who make up these organizations.

The September 2024 issue showcases another summer of Angus activities and educational opportunities. We travel 1,249 miles with the Beef Leaders Institute to learn about the beef industry, pasture to plate.

Digital endeavors launched recently including BEEF Academy, a new education platform launches for Angus juniors hosted by Angus University, and a new Angus.org experience was deployed in effort to be a better resource for members and commercial producers using Angus genetics.

And as always, a highlight of the September issue is our coverage of the National Junior Angus Show. You can find show and contest results, and stories that give you an inside look at this premier junior cattle show.

You’ll also want to be sure to read about a young Angus breeder who started a business to support his hometown.

When leadership and learning, competition and comradery come together it paves the way for Angus youth to manage farms and ranches, be leaders in their communities, working in the industry and be advocates for the rural way of life.
