Whether this is your first National Junior Angus Show (NJAS) or your last, there are a few things you should know before you go. The NJAS is more than a cattle show. It’s a week filled with friendships, opportunities and memories that will stay with you long after your time as a junior member ends.

First-time attendees:

The NJAS is an experience like no other. Here are a few tips to ensure your NJAS debut is everything you want it to be:

1. Come prepared, but be flexible.
Packing your show box and stall setup are vital when setting yourself and your family up for success. Check out the packing list to get an idea of what you’ll need. Be as prepared as possible, but also willing to embrace challenges. Things won’t always go perfectly, and that is OK.

2. Meet new people.
Your state may feel like home, but NJAS is the perfect chance to connect with juniors nationwide. Introduce yourself and begin a conversation. My favorite conversation starter is, “How many did you bring?” or “How was the drive?”

3. Take advantage of all NJAS has to offer.
There are endless opportunities to learn and grow at the NJAS. From contests to educational sessions to the Angus Mentoring Program (AMP), there are many ways to expand your knowledge, develop new skills and connect with others who can help shape your future in the Angus breed.

Last-time attendees:

1. Give back to the next generation.
Take time to mentor young members. Whether you mentor a younger member through AMP or lend a hand to a junior in your state association, encourage them the way someone once did for you. Leave your final NJAS knowing you made an impact.

2. Savor every moment.
The late-night laughs in the barns, the intense competition and the emotional last lap in the ring go by faster than you think. Unplug, be present and take it all in.

3. Thank those who got you here.
This show wouldn’t be the same without parents, advisors, fitters and friends. Take a moment to thank everyone who has helped you along the way.

No matter where you are in your NJAS journey, this event is what you make of it. Take it all in and enjoy every second. It’s not just about winning banners; it’s about the experience, the people and the memories.

See you in the barns!
