American Angus Association Members,

The American Angus Association celebrated during the 2024 Angus Convention this week in Fort Worth, Texas. We were happy to see the enthusiasm of Angus breeders during the week including lots of optimism and excitement about the Angus business. We had a great night recognizing the accomplishments of Angus breeders during the Awards Banquet and crowned a new Miss American Angus, Rosalind Kidwell from Indiana.

The Association Board of Directors met on Nov. 1 and 4 in conjunction with Convention and the 141st Annual Convention of Delegates. Below are the most significant topics of discussion in those two meetings.

Fiscal Year 2024 financial review: The board received fiscal year end numbers and for the tenth consecutive year, we registered over 300,000 head. We reviewed the audited financials and are pleased to report the Association and all its entities are on solid financial footing. We had a strong year for investments, with solid revenues, cash flow and balance sheets. The full audited financial statement is available online, along with our 2024 Annual Report.

American Angus Auxiliary year in review: Karla Knapp, Auxiliary president, shared the important work the group has done over the last year, including where opportunity for growth and influence lie in the future. The board is always appreciative of the great work the Auxiliary does on behalf of Angus breeders.

Angus Convention future sites and dates: We are looking forward to Kansas City, Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, 2025. In response to member feedback, the dates are more condensed. Most attendees should be able to travel in on Friday morning and home on Sunday evening. The new format will reduce costs and offer more flexibility in locations for the future. The 2026 convention will be held in Louisville, KY.

DNA sample procedure: We continued the discussion on procedures related to archived DNA samples. The member services team will contact the owner of an animal if a breeder requests a genomic profile using the owner’s archived sample.

Red Meat Yield Task Force: John Stika updated us on the work being done with the Red Meat Yield Task Force. The task force is made up by representatives across the industry and weappreciate their work to practically improve the current system while focusing on economically relevant traits.

Appointment of committees, entity boards:

New board members: During the 141st Annual Convention of Delegates, members elected five cattlemen to serve on the board of directors for the next three years. Re-elected to the board for asecond term are Paul Bennett and John Dickinson. Elected to their first terms were Ron Hinrichsen, Mark Johnson and Danny Poss. Jonathan Perry was elected president and chairman of the Association and Jim Brinkley was elected vice president and vice chairman. Darrell Stevenson will serve as treasurer in the coming year.

Appointment of committees, entity boards: Chairmen of the entity board were also elected:

  • Certified Angus Beef: Smitty Lamb
  • Angus Media: Jim Brinkley
  • Angus Foundation: Rob Adams
  • AGI: John Dickinson

Thank you for your interest and feedback on these important topics for the Angus breed and Association members. Feel free to reach out to us or any member of the board with your questions.
