As members of the National Junior Angus Association, we know that learning goes far beyond just competing in the show ring. While winning ribbons is exciting, the real value comes from all the experiences and knowledge we gain along the way. We should always keep learning, both inside and outside the show ring.

Curiosity is the cornerstone of effective learning. In the fast-paced environment of livestock shows, it can be easy to become hyper-focused on the goal of winning. However, true success lies in asking questions and seeking knowledge. Take the time to explore various aspects of the industry—nutrition, genetics, animal health and market trends. Attend workshops, read industry publications and engage with experienced breeders and farmers. By staying curious, we not only enhance our understanding of cattle but also develop critical thinking skills that will benefit us in every facet of life.

Every experience—good or bad—teaches us something. After a show, take a moment to think about what went well and what didn’t. Did you prepare your animal effectively? How did you manage your time? Reflecting on these questions helps you learn and improve for next time. Keeping a journal to track your experiences can be a great way to see how you’re growing.

The skills you develop in the show ring—like leadership, teamwork and responsibility—are useful in many parts of life. Whether preparing for a job interview, working on a school project, or volunteering, the abilities you gain from your livestock involvement will benefit you. Recognizing and using these skills outside of agriculture helps you become well-rounded and ready to tackle any challenge that may come your way.

Learning shouldn’t just be about personal goals. It’s important to engage with the community to understand the impact of our work. Get involved in local fairs, educational events or community service projects. These activities not only expand your knowledge but also foster a sense of responsibility and care for the agricultural world.

As Angus juniors, we are not just competitors; we are lifelong learners dedicated to improving ourselves and our industry. The lessons we learn in the show ring are just the beginning. By staying curious, working together, reflecting on our experiences, applying our skills, and engaging with our communities, we ensure our education continues well beyond the final ribbon.

Let’s strive to be learners beyond the show ring and help create a brighter future for ourselves and the Angus breed!
